I own one
By Little Bobbie
It works well BUT Dell is the pits... they no longer carry this model and it costs more to repair then replace. The next model up has different cartridges so if you have any left when this model goes, tough luck as they can only take a specific kind of cartridge. the quality is good, but unless you like talking to foreigners that speak broken english, you don't get very far with tech support.

Worst printer I have had.
By Alan R
Nothing but problems with this printer ever since I got it. Random paper jams on printing, complete shut downs during photo copying, poor photo scanning quality, EXPENSIVE cartridges, etc. Got so frustrated with it a few days ago trying to copy a few things I literally smashed it to bits with 5 double-fisted over head blows to the printer. Best thing I ever did, forced me to get a new one.

Worst printer...EVER!
By Matthew Kunka
I have had this printer for a year now, and since I got it, I have had to babysit the printing. The top is where you load the paper, and it always jams up, or doesn't suck the paper in. When it does take the paper, it prints sideways and cuts off half the page. My wife also got the same printer and had the same problems. Hand writing is easier than using this POS.

A good Home office all-n-one printer
By Ol' Man
Excellent printer-copier-scanner-fax for the home office.

The print quality is slightly less than a laser printer, but you need a magnifying glass to tell the difference. Use a quality paper and the eye cannot tell the difference.

Yes, it uses ink in quantity, but the black cartridge is double size. The printer warns you when a cartridge is low, so have a spare on hand. I use mostly black and the cartridge was empty while the other colors are only about 1/4 empty. The cost of cartridges is less than the toner cartridges for my Dell laser, but you get fewer pages out of ink. By my calculation, the cost per page is about the same if you purchase good quality cartridges form Amazon. However you get a color multi-function printer at much less than the cost of the color laser.

Envelops feed from the top at the back. Pages to copy go under the lid and you have to put one page in at a time. Reproduction is excellent in either color or black&white.

The scanner works well but it is a bit slow communicating the image back to the PC. I print a signature page from a pdf document; sign it in blue ink; scan it back in to a pdf file. That image looks like a signed original.

The wireless set up is a bit tedious and you have to follow the set up sequence with each PC you want to use. Connect the wire, PC to printer HDMI, go thru the installation. Then disconnect and go thru the wireless (same sequence) to get that PC to see the printer.

The printer sleeps to reduce power consumption; but it comes alive fairly quickly. The software will check for updates; those may require a re-boot on your PC.

I never set up the fax, so I don't know about it.

Will not work with Parallels/Win virtual machine!
By Joel
This is a well-thought out piece of hardware, with easy setup, good cost-per-page, and great all-round workhorse. For hardware, 5 stars.

Unfortunately, Epson seems to be following in the footsteps of HP printers, where the hardware was great and any associated software and customer service were not. Two particulars:

1) The Print dialogs bury the double-sided printing in the menu system, rather than making it easily accessible in the dialog.

2)., beware trying to use this with a virtual machine (I uses Parallels and Win7 on my iMac)! And don't bother contacting the company, because you not only won't get help, you'll get Attitude (both on Chat an on the phone). They don't support 'dual booted systems,' they take no responsibility for not posting that prominently on their website, they won't take comments or suggestions on the matter, and 'did I answer all your questions today?'

It would never occur to me to have to research in advance whether or not a printer (or scanner or fax) would not work in a virtual machine. So caveat emptor!

Fast, reliable, I use to go through ink every couple of weeks and after four months of printing a LOT of powerpoints and things for school, I just replaced the starter ink cartridges it came with.

Wow prints
By Busy Executive
I've been making due with an older Epson Photo EX...can't believe how much the technology has improved since then. The printer is easy to operate, and colors are nothing short of amazing...fine, detailed prints like nothing I've ever been able to produce.

Drawbacks are probably what others mention...the matte black/photo black swapping thing is just silly, the ink cartridges are too small, at highest quality settings the printer's a bit slow, no built-in network interface, and the printer's physically a little on the large size.

Still, for me it's all about the final image quality - and nothing I've seen tops the Epson in this regard.

UPDATE:

Okay, so I've been living with my R2880 for about sixteen months now, and I wanted to refute some of the claims other reviewers have made. Perhaps I'm just one of the lucky ones, but my experience with the R2880 has been nothing short of fantastic.

I've printed well over 2000 prints and gone through dozens of ink cartridges by now, and I'm happy to say that I haven't experienced EVEN A SINGLE JAM, MIS-FEED or other operational problem. I tend to use Epson's Ultra-Premium Luster for 8x10 size prints, Epson Velvet or Exhibition Fiber in 13x19 - and a few non-Epson brands including Museo, Ilford Silk and a few others. I've done a bit with canvas (both sheets and roll), though that's relatively rare for me. The short story is that everything I've tried has worked properly. Overall, I couldn't be happier with my printer.

I do use my printer fairly regularly - always at least once or twice a week, usually more. As of now, except for the cycle when I install a new ink cartridge or initially power it on, I've never seen it waste ink on a cleaning cycle, nor have I ever had to manually trigger cleaning. My volume is high enough that I deal with the ink-swapping sillyness by simply waiting until I have enough material that I can use an entire print cartridge (about 50 prints, generally). I make the switch, print till I run out of matte ink, and then I switch back. This works for me, and doesn't waste any ink.

My initial comment regarding the ink cartridges being too small is probably my number one gripe. Because the various color inks are used at different rates according to the tones in your photographs, it's not like you stop every so often and replace all the ink. You print, replace one color, print some more, replace the next one, and so on. I just find this slows me down unacceptably, and I'd like the option to have maybe 3-5 times more ink per cartridge.

Print quality continues to be amazing...the only other printer I've seen that beats it is Epson's newer 7900 - a much larger printer that costs five times what the R2880 sells for. Yes, I'm a perfectionist with top quality gear, all the best software, calibration equipment, and I spend a lot of time fine tuning everything to get the best possible image quality. But I feel I've been rewarded for this work, and everyone who sees my prints comments as to the quality.

Reviewing the Epson R2880
By Tage W. Blytmann
I ordered my Epson R2880 about a month ago from Amazon, as a replacement for my trusty old Epson 2000P which was about seven years old. My new printer arrived very promptly a few days later. The Vista software installation went smoothly except for the fact that a couple of the amber "ink-empty" lights did not work properly, one never came on and one was flickering, like on and off. (These little lights are located in the ink well, they all (should) come "on" upon printer startup, then go "off", one by one, as each ink cartridge is inserted into the well.) The first couple of prints I made were not good, but I soon discovered that with this printer use only Epson paper and be sure to select the particular type of paper on the screen before commencing printing. I then printed several color and B/W sample prints, examined them under a loupe, and I must say they were great. I was impressed with the quality.

Everything seems to run smoothly for the first week or so, although I noticed that the printer had a tendency to perform prolonged nozzle cleaning sessions. One session lasted between 6 and 7 minutes. That's when I started to look at the ink levels charts. This printer is really using the ink I thought. I then noticed large random dots, about 3mm in diameter on some of my prints, sometimes only an hour after a new start-up nozzle cleaning session. My last printing endeavor on this printer - just following a nozzle cleaning session - were eight 4x4" images where these dots showed up on five prints, some were in the margins and some right on the image itself.

Calling Epson was quite an experience. The person told me to simply do a nozzle clean. I told him I had just done nozzle cleans, but he insisted and I did it. The first print out had the famous 3mm dots on the paper and the print. Do the nozzle clean again, he said. At this point I confronted him with the question of how much ink a nozzle clean required because my ink indicators showed a decrease in ink level of about 15% with each cleaning. He had no answer to that, or to any of my other questions, including the amber light question.

I was now out of ink and had a lot of unwanted dots on many of the prints I had made. At this point I knew I would never feel comfortable using a set of inks priced at about $125. and only wind up with a handful of usable images. I returned the printer as I was still within the 30 days grace period.

One last observation: It appears to me, after reading other reviews, that the ink/nozzle picotechnology is perhaps behind the curve of where it ought to be. In the quest for smaller and smaller picoliter dots, perhaps a different nozzle cleaning technology is required. At least, upscale future printers like this R2880 should have the ability to just clean one (1) color nozzle at a time, as user required, instead of necessarily cleaning all eight colors at a cost I figure to be about $18. to $20. per cleaning session.

Buyer Beware!
By Average John
I am an artist who creates giclee prints of my paintings, and used an Epson Stylus Photo 2200 for six years. It was a reliable printer which gave me high quality prints. The Epson Stylus Photo 2200 worked great from day one, and I never had to speak with an Epson tech.

I purchased the Epson Stylus Photo R2880 as a replacement printer. It would not print 13" x 19" paper. I kept getting paper jams and error messages stating I was using the wrong media for the paper tray. I spent hours on the phone with Epson techs, who finally told me the printer had a defective paper sensor.

I returned the first Epson Stylus Photo R2880 and purchased a second printer. The second Epson Stylus Photo R2880 not only had the same problems, but it also gave me communication errors. I spent another hour on the phone with an Epson tech who refused to call me back as my calling card ran out of minutes.

In my opinion Epson has inadequate service techs, poor customer service, and a poor quality product in the Epson Stylus Photo R2880. I believe this printer was never tested in a rush to get it to market. The only reason it even deserves one star is because it prints 8.5" x 11" sheets. Because my need is for a printer that prints 13" x 19" sheets, I cannot recommend this printer.

PS. Does anybody know where I can get a refurbished Epson Stylus Photo 2200?

Fast Monocrome Laserjet
By Judy
Last week was HP week at Office Depot and I decided to buy the HP LaserJet P2015DN for [...]. Things I particularly like:

--250 sheet input tray under the unit, not stuck out front, reminds me of the old LaserJet II and III workhorses that are still in use by some
--fast start up
--fast print, even duplex
--lots of paper choices, including recycled which I usually use
--small footprint
--easy set up
--excellent print
--plenty of memory for a single user, easy memory upgrade if more needed
--front tray for envelopes, etc.

Things to know:

--cartridge included is the smaller one, rated at 3000 pages (larger is rated at 7000)
--"D" means duplex
--"N" means network card included (not in use by me)
--4 models available
P2015
P2015D
P2015DN (mine)
P2015X comes with a 2nd 250 input tray and 7000 page cartridge
--recommended page volume is 740 to 3,000 pages per month, though the advertised duty cycle is up to 15,000 per month.

This printer was designed for workgroups, though it will serve me well as my primary printer at home. It sits next to my humble HP 1510, ink jet printer, copier, scanner, which I will use if color is needed. I was tired of replacing black inkjet cartridges every 200 pages or so at $15 a pop and having only 50 pages in the input tray. A replacement 3000 page toner cartridge costs about $80.

I started printing the first 100 pages of a document I wanted on paper in the duplex mode. Although duplex is "automatic", one has to tell it to print duplex. It resets to one-sided at the end of the job. By the time I found my 3-hole punch and binder, the job was done, so I printed the other 107 pages which were ready as soon as I was. The duplex process is a bit noisy, but not obnoxious.

If you want the detailed specs, there is a 4-page document at the HP site that covers all 4 printers.

Thanks to the user comments here at Amazon, I decided against a color laser printer in part due to the problems with other than 20 lb. paper. I don't really need color for most of my printing, and am pleased with this choice.

It does do duplex under OS X
By D. Mitchell
I had no problem at all setting the 2015dn up for duplex printing under OS X 10.4.9.

It could be that the drivers have been updated since the previous poster had trouble -- but it also could be that because the duplex feature is well-buried in the options, he didn't find it.

First, make sure that when you check the printer properties under Preferences, that the duplex option is checked. You do this by clicking on "Printer Setup" and going from there.

In the Print dialogue box you first grab the drop-down menu for "Copies and Pages," then select "Layout," and there it is, as "Two-Sided." Select "Long Edge" or "Short Edge" and go.

Works perfectly.

An Incredible Printer
By Bob Rice
After close to ten years of using an HP 4L,(which still works perfectly), I decided to look for a printer with a larger paper reserve and higher speed. I've been thrilled with the P2015dn. The speed is incredible, the paper tray holds 250 sheets, with the front of the unit having a small indicator as to approximate amount of paper left in tray. The 32 MB standard memory means that on a big print job, even if the paper runs out in the middle of printing, it will remember and print the remainder of the job. Here's the great thing...this model of the P2015 unit is network ready with a built-in print server. I have a small network server connecting 2 computers and a wireless router for our laptops. My 4L was connected to a print server with parallel cable. By choosing this unit, all I had to do was use a J45 ethernet cable, plug one end into one of my ethernet hub's empty ports, and the other end into the back of the printer. Install the drivers on each computer (not the server), and you are instantly in business. Just choose the P2015dn as your default printer on each computer. I kept my existing setup for my 4L as a backup printer just in case.)

The really nice surprise was that my ethernet hub is an old 10base-T, and yet the P2015dn still fires out each page at blinding speed. The machine doesn't make a sound until it has processed the job, then starts firing the pages out. Duplexing works perfectly. The extra money spent on this dn model payed in simplicity of installation.

There is no operating manual that comes in the box. There is only the installation disk. The manual can be found on HP's web site. My only problem with the install instructions is they tell you not to turn on the machine until the install is complete, but it can't find the machine on the network to complete the install unless the machine is on, and the software does not tell you at a specific point to turn on the machine. So on a leap of faith, I turned the machine on, it was found on the network, and the install finished nicely. During the install, it will tell you it has to reboot your machine, so don't have anything open while doing the install.

Overall, based on my experience with my old 4L, and the current performance of my new P2015dn, I look forward to many years of trouble free service. You can tell I'm an HP fan. Yes, you can find cheaper makes and models that do the same, but for me, HP is the only dependable brand.

I only say that based on personal experience...I understand others may feel differently. Good luck on your printer purchase.

Home Desktop Printers: the Ink SUVs of Our Times
By mvconsults
Thank goodness the Third Party sellers are coming out with cheaper ink cartridges. I doubt they are OEM, but would be pleasantly surprised if they are.

Anyway I just installed a new PG-210 black ink cart. after the original one ran dry in about a month of owning my new MP-240 printer. Not a lot of printed pages but it's history. Today I printed up some tax forms w/the replacement cart. and it's already 1/3 down. The Color cart. is about 1/2 down. Such is life I guess.

Per Canon tech support, the Black XL sizes give you almost 100% more pages for about 40% more price, but decidedly less for Color XL:

>Below is the ink yield information for the PIXMA MP240 cartridges:

PG-210: 220 pages*1, CL-211: 244 pages *1
PG-210: 2760 pages*2, CL-211: 97 pages *2

PG-210XL: 401 pages*1, CL-211XL: 349 pages *1
PG-210XL: 5205 pages*2, CL-211XL: 144 pages *2

*1 Declared yield value in accordance with ISO/IEC 24711. Values
obtained by continuous printing

*2 When printing Canon standard patterns continuously with the default

Buy the 210XL instead
By Joel Schopp
The 210XL gives you 66% more ink (15ml vs 9ml). It also doesn't cost much more. The only reason the regular 210 cartridge exists is so they can give you less than a full tank of ink when you buy the printer. Don't fall for it, buy the bigger 210XL.

Canon PG-210 Black Ink Cartridge
By Stinky K.
I feel that the cartridge went dry much too quickly, especially when you consider how much these things cost. But that is the deal, buy the printer for a reasonable price and get shafted on the cartridges. I guess this is why so many people simply buy cartridge ink refill kits and just refill the old cartridge. I think Canon would be wiser to make their own product more reasonably priced. I am sure they do market research and figure at what point they lose market share on refill kits. Having said all this, I am happy with the printer itself.

I am updating this review. I have now gone through one more of these cartridges. Someone said you are supposed to get about 220 pages out of it. I only print for school and have in my notebook all the pages I have ever printed out for the last cartridge save, at most, 5 pages. They don't come anywhere near this number. I would say it is about 120-150 pages tops. Above I said I was happy with the printer. However, I am no longer happy with a company that thinks taking advantage of its customers is acceptable and therefore I am no longer happy with the printer. I would now tell you to not buy this printer and only buy refill kits if you already have one. I just bought one from Fry's and it is working fine. Canon can take a flying leap.

Had to return the first one
By C. Goodchild
I did a ton of research and finally decided to go with this unit despite no reviews at the time. Installation was a breeze (using Mac OS X) except for one part where it asks you to set up a print queue. After doing so, it didn't recognize it after multiple attempts. I finally decided to click past that step and it worked fine anyway.

We printed about a dozen photos over the first three days. On day 4, the printer booted up and slammed the print cartridge hard to the left, then came up with a "Carriage Jam" error. The nice thing about the touch screen is that it also visually walks you through pictures of the areas that you need to check for paper jams, etc.. Alas, after going through every trouble shooting step provided, it didn't solve the problem.

We returned it to Amazon (Very hassle free I might add--can't fault them a bit) and decided to try a second one since we did like the features. I was glad to see that Amazon ships you another even before you return the defective one. So far this one is working fine although it's only been a couple of days.

Our last HP was probably 4 years old. I have to say the print speed on this one is amazingly fast by comparison. I'm impressed it can print a 4x6 photo as fast as it does. Copy and scan work well too, although I've found I have to initiate scanning from the Mac. Didn't seem to work if I tried to use the touchscreen to scan. I was pleased how easy they make choosing options with scanning. You can scan a document straight to PDF, JPEG, TIFF, Memory Card, USB drive, OCR...

Overall, it does seem as though this printer is very well made. It's also great having a tray for both paper and 4x6 photos. Unlike so many printer reviews, it doesn't appear as though this printer is burning through much ink at all.

Although I would definitely recommend it, I can't give it 5 stars due to the issues mentioned above.

Terrific choice if you don't demand photographic perfection (until it died)
By William W. Davis
Take a look at the customer images showing the print output from this HP all-in-one!

Quick summary: I like this HP PhotoSmart all-in-one! Setup was very smooth (except for HP's bloatware causing my browser to not work), the photographic output was good for a 4-ink system, scans were bright and crisp, and using this HP all-in-one was very easy to do using the brightly lit touch screen. Highly recommended!

*** UPDATE as of May 5, 2011. My printer died. I'm getting an ink system failure and/or print head error that can't be resolved by just reinserting the ink cartridges (HP branded) or removing the print head to clean it. It's a hardware failure beyond a consumer's ability to fix. I just downgraded my original 5-star rating to 4-stars because a printer that printed fewer than 5000 sheets of paper shouldn't fail this early. I'll still buy another HP replacement all-in-one, though, because for as long as I've owned it, it's been a pretty sweet little machine. ****

I just finished writing a review for a competing product, the Epson Artisan 710 Color Inkjet All-In-One Printer (C11CA53201). After using that all-in-one for over a week, it didn't take long for me to realize how much more I prefer this HP all-in-one. Although the feature set for both are very similar, the HP is much more intuitive to use. Read on to learn more.

*** INSTALLATION:

Unpacking the HP was easy to do. I was very pleased that it came with a package of 100 4x6 sheets of photo paper, so I could immediately begin printing some favorite family shots. Shame on other vendors (think: Epson) who include only a "sample" of a few sheets of photo paper! This model uses a 4-ink system (1 black, 3 color) but the package includes an extra, high capacity black ink cartridge, too, for everyday printing. Nice!

I use my home network to connect to this HP. The HP PhotoSmart C309 easily recognized my discoverable network, and it was very easy to use the touch screen to enter the 26-character key I have for my network. Once entered, the printer was given an IP address by the router and it was ready to work after I installed the drivers on my computer.

I really like how easy it was to insert paper into the front-loading tray. Just raise up a lid, insert paper, put lid back down (for both general-use 8x11 paper and also for inserting 4x6 photo paper). Later, I did experience a problem where the HP couldn't properly load the 4x6 paper into the printing mechanism. Hopefully that's an anomaly.

Installing the HP drivers was a breeze to do on my laptop. It includes out-of-box support for Windows 7 on the enclosed CD-ROM disc (no searching HP's website for Windows 7 drivers!). HOWEVER, by just quickly clicking through the installation windows, I inadvertently loaded seven other HP programs beyond the required drivers to support printing and scanning. Among these were the HP Solutions Center, a program to help re-ordering HP supplies, a Customer Feedback program, HP Print Projects, and a customized Yahoo! toolbar for Internet Explorer. I was thumping myself for not paying attention to the installation process that loaded all this crapware on my computer. Very soon later, I really regretted it because after it was all loaded, my Internet Explorer wouldn't work (even after rebooting my computer). I tried uninstalling the Yahoo! toolbar, and still IE8 wouldn't work. Finally, I used Windows 7's restore feature to return to the last restore point before I loaded the HP drivers and programs, and that removed whatever was causing IE to not work.

From that experience, I paid much closer attention to the 2nd attempt at installing the drivers. HP doesn't make it obvious how to customize the install -- you must look closely for a link on the window that asks you to accept the EULA -- but you *can* deselect all the bloatware and install just 2 programs (the printer and scanner drivers), which is all you really need. After those two programs were installed, the HP C309 was fully functional on my WiFi home network -- and IE was working, too!

I got a new LG Env3 with Bluetooth, so I tried printing a photo taken with my phone using Bluetooth. Setting up Bluetooth was easy! What I learned from the experience is that you must FIRST set the HP to look for Bluetooth devices, THEN place your phone in discovery mode. Once my LG Env3 was paired with this HP, it was easy to print 4x6 photos. And they looked terrific for a camera phone!

*** USABILTY AND PERFORMANCE:

Using the HP was a joy to do. The photographs I printed were very, very good-looking, but depending on the photo, they were sometimes inferior to the six-color print output from the Epson Artisan 710. The Epson's photos have very deep, rich colors and vibrancy, while the photos from this HP were sometimes not so rich in color depth, and not as vibrant. I found that it depends on the photo whether the differences were apparent or not. In some photos (lots of sunlit trees and grass), the differences were very slight. When I printed a studio portrait of my in-laws, the result from this HP unit was as good as my other 6-color printer. In other photos (for example, photos with a deep blue sky), the differences were more apparent (see the customer images I loaded showing this difference). Camera flash-lit faces look a little yellowish coming from this printer. Grass and trees have more yellow in them than what I'd expect, too. If you're wondering whether a six-color printer can really print better than a 4-color printer, the answer is, **YES**, it can...but *not* always! So if you want to print the absolute best photos possible -- all the time -- look to a different all-in-one than this HP PhotoSmart C309. If you're not *that* excruciatingly picky, then this HP will do a very, very good job (especially if you're not contrasting photos printed from this HP with photos printed on another, 6-color machine).

I used the "Copy" function to see how well the HP could duplicate a photograph. Ideally, if you place a photo on the flatbed scanner and press Copy, the copied photo would be indistinguishable from the original, right? Well, there was a definite difference between the copy and the original. The copy was auto-cropped so it lost about a quarter-inch off the border of the original photograph. The colors on the copy were less vivid, too, although the copy was more faithfully reproduced on this HP C309 than what the Epson Artisan 710 could achieve.

Scans taken with this HP were very bright and vivid -- more so than what the Epson Artisan 710 could achieve. The background white on my daughter's drawing was a very bright white, and her ink colors were rendered brightly and sharply on the scanned image. (Keep in mind, I'm using all default, automatic settings -- I could achieve better results if I tried customizing the scan settings). One thing: some of the faint black lines on my daughter's drawing weren't picked up properly on the scanned image. In all, I liked how the automatic scanned image looked. Another perk: The software creates a folder under My Pictures on your computer, and stores the scanned image inside that folder (rather than just adding it to My Pictures alone).

I haven't used the HP long enough to speak to matters pertaining to ink usage. Once I get more experience, I'll re-edit this review to include those details.

SUMMARY:

The HP PhotoSmart C309 is a terrific multifunction choice. If you demand the very best in photographic output, look to a different model that uses a 6-ink system. If good-looking photos is "good enough" for you, then be assured that this printer will print good looking photos. The touchscreen interface was easy and intuitive to use, and loading paper into the front-side slot was no-hassle at all. Aside from HP's bloatware during the software installation process (which you now know how to avoid after reading this review), I like everything about this HP model. Highly recommended!

*** NOVEMBER 16, 2009 UPDATE

I just ordered 2 replacement color ink cartridges for this printer. After printing 21 4x6 photos and maybe three dozen sheets of everyday 8x11 (mostly black text and a little color), the yellow and cyan ink cartridges dipped into the "replace me" levels. The magenta and photo black inks are about one-half spent.

Taking the advice of another reviewer, I opted to order 3 "XL" cartridges for quite a lot more than a regular 3-pack of the color cartridges. I don't know whether the value equation will be favorable or not, but I'm hoping that the cost to print 4x6 photos will go a little lower than what it is currently (which by my calculations, each 4x6 photo costs about 50 to 75 cents to print).

Best printer I've owned so far
By John S. Dean
I had a not very old Epson Photo printer, the RX580, and was happy with it. However, it did not last long at all. While I may go a month or two without printing, I certainly don't expect the printer to become inoperable during downtime...
I purchased a new Mac to replace my tablet PC in July, so a few days ago for the first time I tried to hook my mac up to it, and I could not get anything to print well. After some troubleshooting and testing from other platforms, I realized that there was something wrong with the unit physically, and tossed it in the garbage and looked for a printer at a local brick and mortar.
I was half sold on getting one of the Canon all in one units, based on some favorable remarks in some of the apple forums, but the local store by me only had one model of Canon, a lesser one than I wanted, so I looked at the rest of the available printers, and narrowed it down to this HP and another HP, one step below this. The kicker for me was the bluetooth in this one, which was worth the extra $40 for me, since I run an 802.11n only network at home, and had assumed the wireless on this unit was just 802.11 b/g like most. Happily, I was mistaken.
Got it home, unboxed, and like the other reviewer said, this is a nicely sturdy, well built, solid home printer.
As usual, I downloaded the most current version of the software and driver rather than relying on the CD to be current, and indeed the CD had been superceded. The download and install went fine, so when it started nagging me about where the printer was, I hopped into the printer and set up the wireless just to see, since it actually saw my 802.11n network. Sure enough, entered my encryption key, and there it was. And instantly my mac found it, and the install completed.
One thing to note, the little paper manual that came with it didn't seem to have anything in there regarding setting up the unit, so I'm going to assume detailed instructions are probably on the CD in PDF or TXT files somewhere. But I was able to get the wireless going without any documentation, the touch screen is very well designed and extremely simple to follow. The flow for printing or setup is well thought out.
So I did some printing, both of 4x6 as well as some 8 1/2 x 11 photos, and they turned out just excellent. Superb, better than I had hoped for, and certainly faster than I had expected.
I will also add that the printer loves to do the samba, especially the 8 or 9 minute "first run" it does the very first time you power it on. But it gives the status right on the LCD, and a timer counting down so you know how long it will be. I'm assuming the wiggles after printing are probably cleaning off the heads and parking them to seal them again between print jobs.
I haven't tried the duplexer yet, but as the other reviewers mentioned, scanning is just as simple and as high quality as the printing.

After I knew it worked and was happy with it, I hopped back into the on screen menu and checked the bluetooth settings, then added it via bluetooth to my mac, and a minute later, was printing via bluetooth.

One surprise was that it actually came with a USB cable for those who will use one - something I'm not used to seeing bundled with printers.

Another nice feature for me is the front paper load - after the Epson I just tossed, it's nice to be able to get at the paper right in the front, rather than feeding from the top in the back. Makes it easier on my shelf in the computer armoire, i don't have to roll it out and play around trying to find where things fit back there out of sight.

The finish is nice. And the mac software works well, haven't booted to my Windows 7 install yet to see how it works there, but I would be surprised if I had any problems on the windows side. This is not my first HP printer, and if it performs and lasts as well as my others have, I will be more than happy with it.

I purchased mine without any review searches at all, since it was an impulse grab at the store when the one I was looking for wasn't available, but I'm glad it wasn't, as this one has a few more features and works better than I could have hoped.

They did not work.

Cannot detect and/or cannot print is all I got from these. They simply did not work despite the "compatible" label.

Changed My mind...please read
By DGMAKI
I ran out of black ink and went to replace it with my purchase of the Printonic Compatible Black Ink Cartridge. It doesn't fit!! Since I opened it, I'm stuck with it. It must be used in 6 months and I don't know of anyone who could use it. I haven't tried the cyan, magenta or yellow cartridges yet. They look different from the black one, so maybe they will work. I'll let you know. The one star rating is for the hope that 3 out of 4 will work. Fingers crossed.

The company read my review and admitted that the package contained the wrong black cartridge. They even sent me 2 new black cartridges to replace the one that was the wrong size! I have NO complaints now. The cartridges are working fine.

Color cartridges not compatible J475DW
By Vs
The black cartridge worked perfectly and the ink was excellent too. When it was time to replace the other cartridges, they were not detected at all. The cyan magenta and yellow are not being recognized . 3/4 of my money is wasted although there is a clear mention of compatibility for the J475DW series.

Nice output quality, excellent networking capabilities
By Sobina
Pros:
All functions work as advertised.
Scanning: Love the simplicity of "scan directly to email." The email (SMTP) client supports SSL and thus works with all big email providers (gmail, office365 etc.) Once you setup email shortcuts, it takes 3 clicks to scan to email. Unlike the cx310, the cx410 series does have a duplex scanner, so you just load your 2 sided printouts on top and click go.
Printing: Very, very good quality almost approaching that of an inkjet for photos, especially if you set the color handling to manual and decrease yellow, increase cyan to get a good neutral tone. Text and graphics are tack sharp. Takes up to 47lbs paper for duplex and up to 58lbs paper for simplex.
Fax: just works. Supports both fax servers and analog fax. Can receive faxes and route them to email if desired.

Cons:
Setup is very tedious. You have to understand networking inside and out to set this up properly.
SSL: the printer does not come with a list of certificate authorities (such as VeriSign etc.) that it trust right out of the box. To quickly enable email via SSL you have to disable cert checks. Disabling cert checks can only be done via the Web UI. You cannot do it from the printer itself.
Duplex: duplex is a global setting. You cannot disable duplex for heavy paper for example, so if you try to print on thick and heavy paper you have to remember to switch it to simplex on your computer every time.

Overall I'm very happy with it. Well worth the initial tedious setup.

Easy setup; foolproof; reliable
By John Seybold
I bought this printer to replace a cheaper and much crappier consumer-grade HP all-in-one machine. I figured that I would buy a workgroup-sized printer so I wouldn't have to change toner every month. Also, I was hoping for greater durability.

I've only had the printer for a month, but it has been flawless so far. Setup was the easiest I've ever seen. I basically plugged in the printer, connected it (via ethernet cable) to my LAN, and powered it on. Then I walked around to a few different computers in my house (all Macs), stuck the software CD in, and within a minute they were ready to print.

I highly recommend this unit for anybody looking to escape from the semi-disposable home printers being (basically) given away to sell toner cartridges. I expect to get years of reliable service from this much more durable machine.

An excellent office printer
By Richard Wagner
We have had this printer for about 3 months, and we have zero complaints. Tack-sharp text and photos, easy scanning to USB thumb drive or workstation, and excellent fax. Who could ask for more? It thoroughly trounces inkjet printers in image and text quality.

Canon LK-62 Printer Portable Kit Battery & Attachment
By Lydia Hill
This is a wonderful addition for the Canon portable printer. I am often on the road and in facilities where it is sometimes difficult to find enough power outlets, this device is definitely a valuable resource and companion for this printer.

Liberates you from Cable; Liberates Space on Desk
By singhee
The concept of a battery operated printer was quiet exciting. I had been looking for a portable printer (to make my office truely mobile).
A few years ago, I had seen canon wireless printer and was looking for the same (though it worked only when connected to a power outlet). Great to see that Canon had upgraded the product to make it work with battery power too.

The software install was smooth.

Hiding the bluetooth receiver on the DC Power inlet side is a clever option provided by Canon. It's a pity the Canon user manual does not tell you about it. There is just a photograph of it on one of the many printed material I received with the printer. If not for another reviewer on this site (Guys, you provided the best hidden gem!), I would have never known and would have been looking for it in all the reasonable places. I even tried to fit it in the empty space in the battery compartment (how stupid of me!). Pulling the cover on the DC Power-in side is a bit scary. I felt as if I am going to break the plastic plate and destroy the printer aesthetics within 15 minutes of opening the package. Putting it back brought back the same sensation. Maybe that's the reason why Canon is not explicitly advertising this option/providing it in their user manual!

The sytem recognized the printer over bluetooth connection without any issue.

Printing the first page (right from booting up the printer) seems to take forever. But once the cartridges have powered themselves, printing is very fast and smooth. The quality of prinout is great too - both in mono and color.

I have not yet tried how many pages can I print non-stop before the battery finally discharges. If I happen to print out a large volume, I would definitely like to give it a try and then update my review here too.

The best part is - if I do not need to print, I keep it away inside my laptop bag - gives me extra space on the desk real estate. When I need it, I bring it out, use it, once done send it back to where it was.

I am enjoying the printer everybit every day of my work-life.

Canon LK62 Printer
By Kevin Lew
This is a great printer because of its size and portability. In an urban living setting, every square inch of living space counts. Just take it out of the closet, print something, and very conveniently put it away out of sight. Now I'm either a noob or its a real bi+ch to set up for wireless. It took me a couple hours and don't ask me how I did it.

NOT Exactly The Same as OEM
By Jack Beggs
These cartridges have a difference from the Canon OEM cartridges that may be noteworthy. The rear translucent latch that locks the cartridge down into the print head is shorter than the OEM cartridge. The latch does seem to catch but it does not stick up as far out of the head after the cartridge is installed. One result is that the red light that shows cartridge condition/status is not visible out the back of the print head. You can see the red light on the rear of the cartridge only if you look down into the print head behind the cartridge.
The Canon Pixma IP47000 does seem to recognize and utilize the cartridge. Performance over time is yet to be observed.

Pretty good, but not as good as original
By APF
This was the second time I ordered this ink from the CartridgeWarehouse.

These cartridges fit my Canon MP560 correctly, and the ink seems to be reasonably bright and vivid.

I think, however, there might be a problem with cartridges' computer chips. When my blue and yellow cartridges from the first order ran out of ink completely and stopped printing, the ptinter monitor was showing that they were only nearing the end of life and still had a little ink left in them.

Also, when I opened a magenta cartridge my second order, a few drops of ink came out. I was able to catch it with my hand, but if it fell on the carpet, it would have been a problem. I recommend you remove tape from cartridges over something that can catch potential ink drops (e.g. plastic bag, plate, sink, etc.).

Overall, the cost-benefit of these cartridges is good, so I will, most likely, reorder in the future.

So far, good
By David G B
Can't give it a Five Star because I just put it in and need to see how long it lasts. At this point I'm pleased about the price (that's why it was chosen) and I'm pleased that when it was inserted it was recognized by the printer. I've tried unbranded before in other printers that were rejected upon warm up. Two out of three is good. If it lasts as long as the original brand, then I'll give it a five. I would recommend.

Nice printer, nice scanner, great for novice users
By Nick R.
This printer was purchased as a birthday present for my mother, who has been hampered by a Windows Vista computer and a malfunctioning HP Printer (it worked great with XP...). We purchased the Canon PIXMA MP560 printer for $85 (free shipping) on Amazon, and comparing the price to other retailers online (and the retail price), it was no contest.

This printer has some features that you may already know of via the product description page, but I'd like to elaborate on some of these features.
Thoughts out of the box:
-The MP560 has a folding LCD screen that covers the function buttons. The screen is not too large, but it does seem to have large enough text (and a simple GUI) to work well for novice printer users. There are not too many buttons, and they're large, well-marked, and simple enough for anyone to recognize.
-The printer has a lower paper tray (for regular inkjet/copier paper) and an upper vertical tray (for thicker photo paper and other things). The vertical tray has an automatic two-sided width adjustment/alignment, so any size paper is aligned to the proper position every time (and the thickness is adjustable from maximum printing width of the printer, down to only an inch or so).
-The basic instruction manual is printed on paper, and easily guided me through the process of installation of the print head/ink, paper, software, and wireless network capability. This guide has simple words and illustrations, though it does not include every detail of the printer's operations (the more complex instruction/user manual is electronic, and is installed with the printer software). There is a Network Troubleshooting guide, as well, that seems to be rather detailed (though unnecessary in my case). The printer comes with a sample pack of 4"x6" photo paper, which we immediately tested (and it passed the test with flying colors). There's other throw-away junk included, but nothing that surprising.
-The printer is clearly labeled so as to make it simple to place cartridges in the right location, once the print head is installed.
-The fact that the MP560 has multiple single-color ink cartridges may seem expensive at first, but with tri-color cartridge printers, we would always seem to run out of a single color much faster than other colors... so we were wasting a good amount of ink each and every time we replaced a cartridge. This printer seems to have ink cartridges that would be easier to refill than some other cartridges, as well.

After powering it on:
-It was EFFORTLESS to set up the MP560 on our wireless network. It quickly detected the network (our router is on another floor in the house, on the other side of the house), and it still had a good quality signal, and it only took a few minutes (and only a couple pushes of a button... plus entering our internet security key) before the printer was connected. There is a rotating pad (similar to an IPod) on the printer that lets you select any security codes you may have (and navigate through the GUI)... so it may take awhile if one has an alphanumeric password, but it was rather quick for a numeric 8-key code. Heck, my mom is not too familiar with computers, and I have no doubts that she could have set up this printer with the network.
-The printer comes with easy to use software (again, in Vista), though it does take a few minutes for the software to install itself on a PC. The basic instruction manual makes it rather easy to install everything, whether using Windows or Mac. Once installed, the printer is rather effortlessly found (remember to have attached the printer to the wireless network), and before you know it, you're ready to print.
-The printer has a laser ink level meter for every cartridge, and it can be displayed on the computer and on the 2" LCD screen on the printer (actually, pressing one button on the "Home" screen will allow you to see each ink level). So far, it does not appear as if this printer over-uses ink... in fact, printing on glossy photo paper seems to suggest there's less "gunk" on the paper than some other printers, perhaps due to the finer ink jets this printer allegedly uses.

Using the printer for the first time:
-The printer and software actually WORK WELL with Windows Vista!
-The printer does take a few seconds to warm up, but after the first print job, it seems to be much faster.
-The MP560 didn't have a single problem feeding thicker photo paper.
-The quality of printed pictures is very good, showing very tight pixels even on plain paper. Photo paper shows an excellent picture quality, and the software included with the printer makes it effortless to print photos with certain photo papers... no need to change printer settings manually.
-The scanner/copier seems to produce quality pictures, although this isn't the fastest, nor the quietest, copier I've seen in a multi-use printer.
-The Duplex printing feature is a great thing to have in a lower-cost home printer, as few documents are of an official, legal nature, hence there's no need for one-sided printing. It gets to be inconvenient to flip the pages by hand each and every time one wants to print on both sides of a piece of paper, so it is great to find a lower-cost printer that has this feature. This printer does not print internally, it prints on one side and extracts the page, then gathers the page back inside the printer and prints on the other side, so I don't know how well Duplex printing would work on thicker media such as fabrics.

All in all, this is a great printer so far. It beats anything I've ever owned, in terms of print quality and functionality, and I'd say it's a pretty good value to boot. Mom is certainly happy about this printer, and she's going to test it with some of her crafts... let's see how it stands up to the test of time when she puts it to use.

Works flawlessly with Mac Snow Leopard
By Otto Olah
UPDATE (2011/03): Canon is phasing out this printer, replacing it with the MG5220. As supply runs low, this old model is offered by third parties at a higher price. Go with the new model, save money, enjoy full ' Mac OS X compatibility out of the box. Namaste.

My old review:
--------------------------------------

I wrote this review to help Mac OS X 10.6 users. If you are a Windows user, please read the other reviews of this product.

This is a high quality, versatile, quiet, well thought out, well built all-in-one printer. As with other brands, the included software is pile of unnecessary mediocre ugly looking confusing mess. Canon makes a mistake by not offering a driver only installation, which would allow us to use the printer and the scanner without installing their proprietary software suite. I am set out to correct their mistake...

Connecting the printer to WiFi is very simple, just navigate in the printer's setup menu on it's LCD, select your network and type in the password. The blue WiFi LED will confirm that the printer is connected.

To be able to print wirelessly, you have to have the latest drivers. To install them, forget about the CD in the box (it has OS X 10.5 compatible drivers only), and the 13 page "Getting Started" guide to install stuff you don't need. Just download the latest drivers from the Canon USA website. Go to Canon USA :: Downloads :: Consumer Products :: Multifunction :: Photo All-In-One Inkjet Printers :: PIXMA MP560, grab and install these files:

- MP560 series CUPS Printer Driver Ver. 10.26.1.0 (Mac OS X 10.5/10.6)
- MP560 series Scanner Driver Ver. 15.4.1 (Mac OS X 10.3/10.4/10.5/10.6)
- ICA Driver (Mac OS X 10.6)
(the version numbers might change when updates are coming out)

Once the printer drivers are installed on your Mac and it's connected to the same WiFi network as the printer, just go to System Preferences / Print & Fax / + (add printer) and wait a few seconds. You will see a "Canon MP560 Series Bonjour Scanner" and a "Canon MP560 Series_NNNNNN0000000 canonijnetworkr" printer listed, you can add them and you are ready to print and scan! When adding, you can edit the name to make it look a little bit nicer. If you prefer, you can connect the printer via an USB cable and the printer will be automatically installed.

I spent hours trying to figure this all out on my iMac, I installed the contents of the CD, tried to upgrade the drivers from the Apple and the Canon websites. Once I understood what needed to be done, it took only minutes to install the drivers on my two MacBook's. Save yourself some headache and keep your Mac clean of bloated junkware by installing only the drivers you need. These will allow you to control all the printer's functions (duplex, paper size and type, alignment, head cleaning, ink levels, etc.), and even your spouse and kids will be able to use them.

Why can not these instructions be found on Canon's support pages? Why is their installation procedure so messy? Trust me, it's not a Mac problem, their Windows soluition is equally complicated. Will the situation be better once their printers ship with OS X 10.6 compatible drivers? I think the core problem is that they are not listening to their customers. If they did, you'd see a reply from a Canon official under my review. Don't look, it won't be there...

This printer supports direct iPhone printing if you install the free "Canon Easy-Photoprint" app from the Apple App Store. You will be able to print to 4x6" photo paper right from your iPhone when both devices are connected to the same WiFi network.

I recommend this printer, it does a nice job once it's set up. Do not hesitate to buy it if you are on Snow Leopard. But call Canon's support line and tell them they should not overcomplicate the printer installation process.

Update 1: If you have any kind of trouble with the printer or the installation, call Canon Support at 1-800-828-4040, they are very good with Mac's and willing to spend the time figuring out problems. My iMac could not detect the printer through WiFi no matter what I tried while my MacBook's could print flawlessly. Canon support figured out that Parallels was interfering with the network settings even when not running. I doubted it, but Parallels support confirmed it. I had to remove Parallels, install the printer and re-instal Parallels. All works now.

Update 2: For occasional single page scanning jobs Snow Leopard's built-in Image Capture is sufficient. If you want to catalog your scans, convert them to multi-page PDF's, use OCR (Optical Character Recognition) to create editable text files from of your scans, you should download and install Canon's "MP Navigator EX 3.0". The name is not very catchy, but he interface is nice, the functions are not too hard to learn, and the program does well what it's supposed to do. It's a decent scanning utility, go for it if you don't mind the 80 MB installation footprint.

Update 3: Thank you everyone for your kind words in the comments! I am not an educator, just a frustrated customer who wanted to save others from the trouble I went through. I'm very pleased that this review helped so many fellow Mac users with installing a nice multifunction printer. Thank you Amazon for the opportunity! If any of you purchases this printer and finds that a Snow Leopard compatible installation disk is included, please let us know, I will update the review.

Suits my needs
By Trilless
I did research when deciding what printer to buy and had been looking at the earlier model the canon mp620. I decided to wait until the mp560 was released because it had a couple extra features. I purchased it on August 28th and it has worked well since.

I use it mostly for text and occasionally for photos, 8x11 and 4x6 both. I have not yet replaced the ink though the indicator says the black text ink is halfway down.

I was able to follow all the instructions for inserting the print head and the cartridges. I selected the password method to hook up to my network just like I do with computers connecting to the network. It worked flawlessly and I can print to it from the laptop or the desktop.

The software is easy enough to use and the red-eye fix is nice for my family photos, though obviously the software isn't that complex like photoshop. It is less intrusive than the bloatware I used to have with the cheapo HP printers I had purchased in the past. It also doesn't need to constantly update like that hp stuff.

I went for this mid-priced model and it works every time. No longer do I have to wonder if the (hp) printer will choke up on me, or pull too many pages through, or say 'no paper loaded' when there is some.

Scanning and copying work fine. Recommended.

Edit: Addition 12/7/2009: works fine with my copy of windows 7.

Pros
- Wireless for multiple computers
- Duplex is great for longer text printing jobs
- 5 separate ink tanks
- Reliable

Cons
- Slow (but it doesn't really bother me)

Great affordable printer
By Lincoln
For this review I've decided to compare the Kodak ESP 7250 to similarly priced models from Canon, HP and Epson. All 4 models are Wireless All-in-One Ink Jet Printers (printer/scanner/copier).

Basic Summary of the Kodak ESP 7250

- 35 second warm up after powering on.
- Prints nearly instantly. No secondary warm up before each print job.
- Colors are not as bright as the competition, but very natural looking.
- Prints very quietly. Minimal body shake while printing.
- Double sided printing.
- Separate paper tray and photo tray.
- Digital menu on printer is great. Very easy to navigate options. Very intuitive interface.
- Small footprint. Smaller than competition.
- Most attractive design in price range. Smooth lines. Not too techy.
- CHEAP INK. Lower priced manufacturer ink than the competition. VERY BIG PLUS.

Kodak ESP 7250 vs:

1) Canon PIXMA MX870

- Kodak is quieter, prints faster, looks better.
- Canon has slightly better print quality - not much better though. Most people won't notice the difference.
- Canon is louder while printing, shakes a lot, and takes longer to warm up and print.
- Canon has more buttons. Kodak has a better menu system.

CONCLUSION: Canon is more business. Kodak is more family.

2) HP Photosmart Premium

- HP's touch screen menu is awesome.
- Both have similar print quality. HP produces a bit brighter colors. Kodak is more natural looking (muted colors).
- HP warms up a bit faster by a few seconds.
- Both print with equal speed, equal noise and equal printer shake (almost none).
- Nearly equal footprint.
- Both are visually attractive designs.
- HP ink is more expensive.

CONCLUSION: Very similar printers. HP's touch screen is awesome. Kodak ink is more affordable.

3) Epson Artisan

- Epson's 5-ink system prints amazing! Best in class.
- Epson ink is expensive.
- Kodak printer is more visually attractive.
- Kodak prints faster.
- Kodak has a better menu system.

CONCLUSION: Epson prints awesome photos. Kodak is a more economical all-around printer.

In the land of printers, there are those who print amazing photos (like the Epson), those that are super techy (like HP's touch screen), those that are work horses (Canon) and those that are just good, middle of the road, some bells but no whistles printers. The Kodak ESP 7250 is one of these middle of the road printers. The photo print quality is good, but not fantastic. But everywhere else the Kodak is a solid performer, having all the features a printer should have while looking good and staying quiet. What sets this printer above the rest is the low cost of printing.

So if you aren't super picky about your photos and you want to save some money in the long run, while still getting a solid printer, then the Kodak ESP 7250 is the way to go.

If my review was helpful, please click the "YES" button below. Thank you and happy printing!

Fabulous printer we can't live without
By Susan H. Reynolds
My family was lucky enough to get one of these printers to test for a few months. We had to send the test printer back yesterday but I'm putting my own on order today. The print quality and speed are incredible, the printer design is sleek and highly functional and the supplies are cheap compared to the dinky HP deskjet we had been using. I found the Kodak technical support unparalleled, especially compared to HP, and Canon. Kodak even built in a photo help center for photo editing, and printing. I did all 100 Christmas photo cards only with this software, and I used less than one black and one color cartridge. The Wireless function is great; my husband could print from his Windows work laptop and my daughter printed from her Macbook files from her room. We didn't know you could print from an IPOD Touch, but she'll get the free app to print from that. I didn't get paid to write this, but you ought to know what a cool printer it is, (I am not a techie, just a mom)

All in one Printer
By Ralph Furlong
I received this product through the Amazon Vines Program. I currently have an HP Officejet 7410 All in one and was looking for something that was a bit smaller. The Kodak ESP 7250 really surprised me with the size and ease of setup! From the time I started opening up the box until I had the unit up and running with my wireless network and software installed on my laptop took a total of 33 minutes. Here are the plus features of the unit:

1. Easy to install. The instructions are very straight forward and short. I actually completed most of the setup just by looking at the unit and following the pictures. I only referred to the written instructions PRIOR to powering it up to ensure that I had done verything correctly.

2. Wireless networking was simple and works great! No more need to have your printer located somewhere where cables can be run to connect the printer to the network or to the computer! Loading the software onto the laptop and desktop was quick and it immediately located and installed the drivers for the printer on the wireless network.

3. Size is much smaller than the HP 7410 printer, though the HP includes a Fax (something that this all in one does not) and the HP also has a sheet feeder (something that the Kodak unit also does not have). Still, it is about half the size which helps to locate the unit in smaller locations.

4. There is a seperate photo paper slot that handles either 4X6 or 5X8 photo paper. This is seperate from the regular paper tray and you can have both loaded at the same time. A selection on the printer software tells the printer which paper to draw upon.

5. Scanning surface works very well and I feel is a bit better in quality than the HP.

6. The included software for working with your pictures is simple and does a nice job in the printing of pictures. I was very pleased with each of the pictures that printed and they were dry and ready to use as soon as they came off the printer. No smudging or running ink!!

Surprises with the Printer:

The only surprise was that as soon as I loaded the software onto my laptop, it found that there was an update to the firmware for the printer. Since this is a brand new model, that did surprise me. However, the laptop was able to download and install the firmware update for the printer over the wireless network quickly and everything worked fine the first time through.

Negatives:

1. As with any ink printer, this is not the quietest unit in the world. The unit does vibrate and make noise as it aligns itself and as it prints. So, insure that you put it onto a stable surface!!

2. Although it says that it is an all in one printer, it does not support Fax!! Yes, that is a dying feature, but it is still one in use.

3. No feeder tray does make it a bit less usefull if you are trying to copy several pages at once. However, the included two sided capablity does at least ensure that you are able to use both sides of the paper automatically if you so desire.

All in all, I am very pleased with this printer and it will be replacing my HP All in One.

Compact handy labeler
By Strohmian
I've owned a Brother PC- only labeler for a few years now, but I ended up not using it much after the initial play period. The problem is, if you have to sit down and fire up your PC and the software (no matter how intuitive and sexy), it's just easier to use a pen, or nothing at all for that matter! After I read that David Allen, the author of Getting Things Done, concurred, I looked again for a more "ready when you are" tool. I highly recommend that you check out Brother's website; they have a nifty comparison feature that you can customize per model and feature and produce a PDF at the end - great for your final decision process. For me, size and an auto cutter were the main features I was looking for, and that eventually lead me to this device, the little-reviewed 18R.

This particular unit is 2-3 times smaller in volume than all its brothers (non-intended pun here), thanks to its rechargeable battery. I was resisting this rechargeable business at first, because it implies frequent use (like a cell phone or laptop), but I warmed up to it. The price difference isn't that great (~$20 compared to a slightly lesser unit, the price of 8 good rechargeable AAs actually), plus it turned out that the little beast can go up to six months of occasional use without recharging, which is very impressive in my book. The NiMh cell is custom and labeled "Brother 18R"; hopefully there will be replacements in a couple of years when it finally gives out. I especially like the fact that this unit stores extremely well in addition to it being small: unlike the desktop models which sit flat on your desk and awkwardly occupy a lot of space no matter where you place them, this one actually goes into your library like a book, or upright into a corner of your desk drawer or file folder.

The auto cutter lives up to its name, so much better than manual. It cuts off the tape lead so you don't have to keep scissors around (you may find that funny, but re-cutting labels was standard procedure with my other labeler!). My favorite is the "chain mode". Here, you essentially delay your latest print in favor of a more efficient use of tape material. For example, if you enter "January", "February" and "March" and hit Print every time, the "March" label remains in the unit until you print something else or change your mind and hit the "scissors" button. This should address most people's issues with the wasted tape; it's as good as it gets with this system.

The device is very easy to use: while you type your text, it tells you how long your label is going to be. If you select borders, etc. the graphical display shows you the styles, and if you desire you can hit the preview button to get a WYSIWYG representation before printing. There are also a few "layouts" available, for example fixed-length (for your file folders), or two-line printing with different font sizes on each line (I find these particularly useful to label my Nalgene bottles with the content plus my name underneath). Unfortunately, the chain print mode (see above) doesn't work with those handy layouts; it always cuts off about 1/2" of empty tape. But I can live with it.

My minor gripe with this device is the low-contrast, non-backlit display (hey, since I'm running on rechargeables, I could justify the energy needs of a backlight). Also, the latch that closes the cassette department doesn't seem solid to me: a tiny plastic thing, similar to the one that broke on my other labeler. While I'm whining, I'd also like 360 dpi resolution for that really industrial look, but those printers are currently much more expensive (or PC- only, which to me is now useless).

Still, this is the most useful, feature- rich, and compact labeler that I've ever used, so 4 stars are deserved. Hope it helped in your quest to label those sock drawers :)

I have had a breakthough in organization since getting the PTouch
By accordionplayer
This system fits nicely in the hands. It holds a charge a long time. I owned another brother product. The batteries did not last long. I purchased the AC adapter which was about the same price as the Labeler. Then I was limited by the cord

This cord-free version with long battery life is great. And means that I can take the labeler to whereever the project is. It automatically cuts so there is an even border on each side of the label. I purchased this because it has the ability to connect to a PC via USB port, though I have not used that feature yet.

It seemed like I went through the tape that came with the system quickly. It may have been shorter (like a sample) I am on my second cartridge and it seems to be lasting a long time.

My only comment is that I think the borders on each side are long--forcing you to use more tape than necessary. But this seems to be how they all work, so I still rate it 5 stars.

Very nice unit
By James M.
This unit is great! It's small, rechargeable, connects to the computer, has many useful formatting modes when you are using it away from the computer, and has an auto-cut function. It also has a chain printing mode that wastes very little tape. This mode selection is remembered until you change it again, no fiddling with settings each time.

The only (minor) complaint is that the charging dock does not have a USB port, so you have to manually plug it into your computer when you set it on the charger. And it's a little pricey, but if you use any P-Touch unit more than occasionally, then the cost of the tape will quickly overwhelm the differences in price between this unit and less expensive ones. And this one is nicer.

great value, great performanc
By winwood
We were shocked to learn how much money we could save by using Blake Printing Supply inkjet cartridges for our Brother and Epson printers. They seem to last longer than the OEM products, the ink quality is at least as good as the OEM, and we are saving about 80% on our ink prices. Very happy a colleague told us to check it out!

Quality Ink
By Paul
This ink does a fine printing job, however I find I have to "manually" clean the printer jets more often. While the normal auto cleaning process was fine for the OEM ink, this ink need probably double the cleaning. With that in mind, the price is fantastic and pushing a couple extra buttons is worth it. I will buy it again.

Wasn't sure at this price
By Packback
I was really leery about this price on replacement cartridges, but was really surprised when I started using them. Printing quality is the same as the factory made ones. I will see if they last as long as Brother made replacements, but if they do, these are the only ones I'll buy from now on.
