Summary of Colin Marshall & Tony Payne's The Trellis and the Vine
Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 Two trellises in your backyard, one attached to the back wall of the garage and the other leaning against the side fence. The former has no vines, while the latter has a jasmine vine growing on it. The jasmine vine is thriving, while the trellis is not. #2 The work of a Christian ministry is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ in the power of God’s Spirit, and to see people converted, changed, and grow to maturity in that gospel. However, as Christian ministries grow, trellis work tends to take over from vine work. #3 As Christian ministries grow, the focus on trellis work tends to take over from vine work. The concentration on trellis work stems from an institutional view of Christian ministry. #4 As Christian ministries grow, the focus on trellis work tends to take over from vine work.

The Trellis and the Vine
All Christian ministry is a mixture of trellis and vine. There is vine work: the prayerful preaching and teaching of the word of God to see people converted and grow to maturity as disciples of Christ. Vine work is the Great Commission. And there is trellis work: creating and maintaining the physical and organizational structures and programs that support vine work and its growth. Colin Marshall and Tony Payne dig back into the Bible's view of Christian ministry, and argue that a major mind-shift is required if we are to fulfill the Great Commission of Christ, and see the vine flourish again. --from publisher description

Shepherding God's Flock
A biblical, historical, theological, and practical foundation for pastoral leadership Pastors have been entrusted with leading the people of God. The shepherds of God’s flock must protect them from and guide them through the many dangers believers face. Although ultimately the Church is led by Christ, pastors are to provide godly examples of what it means to be a follower of the Lord. Consequently, who leads the church, the type of authority they are given, how they relate to one another, to whom they are accountable, and how they are selected are of utmost importance to the life and health of God’s people. This book provides the biblical, historical, theological, and practical foundation of the crucial task of leading God’s people.
Over this past year, the elders our church have benefitted from reading and meditating on Colin Marshall and Tony Payne's excellent book, The Trellis and the Vine .22 The book says that church leaders must make a careful and wise ..."

The Gospel at Work
Reclaim God's vision for your life. Many Christians fall victim to one of two main problems when it comes to work: either they are idle in their work, or they have made an idol of it. Both of these mindsets are deadly misunderstandings of how God intends for us to think about our employment. In The Gospel at Work, Sebastian Traeger and Greg Gilbert unpack the powerful ways in which the gospel can transform how we do what we do, releasing us from the cultural pressures of both an all-consuming devotion and a punch-in, punch-out mentality - in order to find the freedom of a work ethic rooted in serving Christ. You'll find answers to some of the tough questions that Christians in the workplace often ask: What factors should matter most in choosing a job? What gospel principles should shape my thinking about how to treat my boss, my co-workers, and my employees? Is full-time Christian work more valuable than my job? Is it okay to be motivated by money? How do you prioritize - or balance - work, family and church responsibilities? Solidly grounded in the gospel, The Gospel at Work confronts both our idleness at work and our idolatry of work with a challenge of its own - to remember that whom we work for is infinitely more important than what we do.

Shepherding the Pastor
Shepherding the Pastor helps new and upcoming pastors understand the common challenges and pitfalls that arise in the early years of ministry and to face difficulties with faith, wisdom, and patience. Many pastors feel isolated and helpless, especially those beginning pastoral ministry. Phil Newton and Rich Shadden know what this road is like, and they want to share what they have gained from pastoral mentoringRich, a young pastor receiving support and guidance from Phil, an older, more experienced shepherd. Using real life examples of their mentor/mentee relationship, they identify four key practices that will help pastors thrive despite the stresses of ministry: a deepening walk with Christ, faithful exposition of Scripture, continual learning from mentors, and growth in skillful patience with their flock. Published in partnership with 9Marks.
In their book e Trellis and the Vine , which is essential reading for pastors, Colin Marshall and Tony Payne use a helpful illustration in describing local church ministry: Churches are a mixture of trellis and vine."
Hotter Than Gossip

Loving Messy People
Life’s a mess. And nobody escapes it. Your life’s a mess. Your friends and family’s lives are a mess too. Thankfully God has a plan to deal with the mess. It involves you, and it involves me. Even with all of our messes, God wants to use every one of us in the lives of those around us to be part of his glorious rescue plan in their lives. But, if you don’t know exactly what to do or even where to start, Loving Messy People is for you. This book is a practical handbook designed to equip you for each of the messy situations in your life and the lives of those around you. Filled with real-life stories, biblical truth, and practical wisdom, Loving Messy People will show you how God wants to use you in his plan to transform the mess in people’s lives into something redemptive and beautiful.
Now, calling suffering heartbreaking, real, and evil doesn't mean that it's not redeemable. ... in a couple of chapters, applying gospel hope to the suffering in people's lives begins with recognizing the suffering in the first place."
Serving a Movement
In Serving a Movement, best-selling author and pastor Timothy Keller looks at the nature of the church’s mission and its relationship to the work of individual Christians in the world. He examines what it means to be a “missional” church today and how churches can practically equip people for missional living. Churches need to intentionally cultivate an integrative ministry that connects people to God, to one another, to the needs of the city, and to the culture around us. Finally, he highlights the need for intentional movements of churches planting new churches that faithfully proclaim God’s truth and serve their communities. This new edition contains the third section of Center Church in an easy-to-read format with new reflections and additional essays from Timothy Keller and several other contributors.
Many of these examples are adapted from the ones found in Colin Marshall and Tony Payne , The Trellis and the Vine : The Ministry Mind-Shift That Changes Everything (Kingsford, Australia: Matthias Media, 2009), 54 – 56."
Center Church
Today many pastors are struggling to adapt to a post-Christian culture without abandoning orthodox theology. How do we communicate the concepts of grace and substitutionary atonement in our globalized culture and context? In Center Church, Timothy Keller offers challenging insights and provocative questions based on over twenty years of ministry in New York City. This book outlines a theological vision for ministry - applying classic doctrines to our time and place - organized around three core commitments: • Gospel-centered: The gospel of grace in Jesus Christ changes everything, from our hearts to our community to the world. It completely reshapes the content, tone and strategy of all that we do. • City-centered: With a positive approach toward our culture, we learn to affirm that cities are wonderful, strategic and underserved places for gospel ministry. • Movement-centered: Instead of building our own tribe, we seek the prosperity and peace of our community as we are led by the Holy Spirit. "In this important book, Tim Keller unpacks the gospel and gently but firmly reminds us that it is nonnegotiable. At the same time, he enables us to think through how we can responsibly interact with the culture, how we can - indeed, must - appreciate good things within it, and how we can firmly and faithfully apply the gospel to it." - D.A. Carson, research professor of New Testament, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School

MultiChurch
Is it time for your church to go multisite? It seems everybody is doing it these days, so how do you know if it is the right solution for your congregation? MultiChurch brings clarity to the multisite movement and assembles the lessons it has learned over the past fifteen years. It explores the opportunities presented by the various forms of multi-site church, identifies areas of concern, and concludes that multisite is not only a biblically sound ecclesiological model, but also a model that provides a compelling solution to contemporary reductionism in the church.
In The Trellis and the Vine , Colin Marshall and Tony Payne underscore that while the vine (i.e., the church ministries of evangelism and discipleship) is paramount, the trellis (i.e., the administrative work) is needed to support the ..."
The Next Step
Once you come to know Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord, what is the next step? If you have been a believer for a while and want to grow further, what is the next step? If you have grown in your faith and want to learn how to help other believers grow in theirs, what is the next step? This book will begin to answer these important questions. In Peter's second letter to scattered believers, he challenges us to add seven character qualities to our faith that will help us grow to be more like Christ. The Next Step looks at these seven character qualities, along with God's corresponding attributes, to help us grow in these qualities as we grow in our understanding of God's character. In every chapter, Johnson introduces readers to prayer, grace, and practical ways to begin reaching out to the people God places in our lives. The Next Step will help you grow in your daily walk with the Lord and will launch you on a lifelong journey of investing in others to help them walk with Christ.

Empower
As the second book in the Explorations in Theological Field Education series,Empower is a toolkit for mentors working with beginning ministers. Chapters from ministry practitioners and field education program directors offer lessons gained through hundreds of hours of mentoring experience. Seasoned practitioners reveal how to do the work of mentoring in ways that are “fitting” to the particular needs of students with whom they have worked. This volume, then, is not a cookbook or a manual. It is itself a mentoring guide to those who wish to deepen and expand the craft of mentoring. Its goal is to meet ministry mentors in their journey towards skillful mentoring, and to provide guidance and support to help them hone their craft.

The Hero: How The Story of God Shapes Our Life Together
Who's your hero? We each have this propensity to view our life as our own independent story, with ourselves in the starring role. We live as our own saviour, overcoming our challenges and living for our glory. How's this working out for us?The Gospel of Jesus calls us to flip the script and find our place in the story of God. We are minor characters in his grand and glorious story. We find true meaning, forgiveness, purpose and joy as we find our place in God's story, shaped by the gospel of Jesus.Whether you have never opened a Bible or have been a Christian your entire life, The Hero calls us to truly know and be defined by the gospel story, and to experience life as God intended it to be.

Disruption
Well-meaning church leaders and planters often set out to radically transform their communities for Christ-kingdom causes. Their aspirations and visions are limitless. However, often the best-laid plans fail to yield results of any consequence—they become frustrated, and pull the plug leaving behind the remnants of all their best intentions. Does it have to be this way? Is it possible for a local church to become so influential in its community that it becomes a life-giving agent for believers and non-believers? A resource that becomes the catalyst whereby abandoned buildings are repurposed, small businesses attracted, jobs created, crime reduced, justice progressed, health improved, and ultimately, the kingdom of God advanced in such a way that it impacts the every corner of the community? In Disruption: Repurposing the Church to Redeem the Community, Dr. Mark DeYmaz explains why such an outlook it not only possible but essential for the church to gain credibility and relevance in the community it seeks to influence. Genuine transformation never occurs through maintaining the status quo. A Disruption is often the missing ingredient that moves the church from ineffective to radically transformative.
In The Trellis and the Vine , Colin Marshall and Tony Payne include a chapter titled “Why Sunday Sermons Are Necessary but Not Sufficient.”9 To turn a familiar phrase often but wrongly attributed to Francis of Assisi: “Preach the gospel."
Mind the Gap
In a rapidly changing world, how do you maximize your church’s effectiveness no matter what you’re faced with? In Mind the Gap, Clint Grider addresses the question that plagues many pastors’ minds: “Is what we’re doing really working? Are we as effective as we could be?” Using an extended metaphor of the London Underground railway system, Clint offers a thoughtful, timeless way for leaders to evaluate and bridge many of the critical gaps that exist in ministry. A combination of deep thinking and practical clarity, Mind the Gap demonstrates how churches can know they’re making the best decisions to multiply their disciple-making vision in all contexts. This is not just another leadership book filled with simplistic clichés, nor a book about a new ministry model. Instead, Mind the Gap offers a new mindset that cuts past the noise. For leaders who want to address gaps between what they think the church should produce and what’s actually happening in people’s lives, who want to deepen their people’s growth and impact for Christ, and who want to adapt nimbly when challenges arise, there is Mind the Gap.
In The Trellis and the Vine , Colin Marshall and Tony Payne discuss the importance of this call for every believer and remind us that “despite the almost limitless number of contexts in which it might happen, what happens is the same: a ..."

C.R.A.S.H Course serves as a foundation of beliefs and practices for the Christian life of making disciples. The title is used as an acronym for Christianity, Relationships, Answers, Servant, and Handoff. Can These Bones Live
Bill Henard believes that there is hope for the established church – for your church. Some people may have already pronounced the church “dead,” but these dead bones can live. Whether your church is seven years old or one-hundred and seventy, you may be seeing evidences that your church needs vision, direction, and revitalization.
Mark Dever's Nine Marks of a Healthy Church, Stephen Macchia's Becoming a Healthy Church, and even to some degree Colin Marshall and Tony Payne's The Trellis and the Vine , all demonstrate this paradigm shift from church growth to church ..."
Gospel Renewal
It is quite easy to assume that if we understand the gospel accurately and preach it faithfully, our ministry will necessarily be shaped by it—but this is not true. Many churches subscribe to gospel doctrines but do not have a ministry that is shaped by, centered on, and empowered through the gospel. Its implications have not yet worked their way into the fabric of how the church actually does ministry. These churches’ theological vision has likely arisen from something other than sustained reflection on the gospel. Gospel-centered ministry is more theologically driven than program driven. To pursue it, we must spend time reflecting on the essence, the truths, and the very patterns of the gospel itself. This eBook contains the second part of Center Church, “Gospel Renewal.”In it, Keller reflects on the history and patterns of revival—how individual and corporate gospel renewal occurs—and what happens as a result.
Colin Marshall and Tony Payne's The Trellis and the Vine : The Ministry Mind-Shift That Changes Everything (Kingsford, Australia: Matthias Media, 2009) understands the heart of ministry to be the training of lay ministers of the Word."
First Steps Discipleship Training
When It Comes to Disciple Making . . . You Get What You Aim For! Because the church grows at the edges, discipling new believers may be one of the most important things you do! Jesus knew this. At the pivotal post-resurrection point, he took the newer-in-faith and synergized a movement. Yet the biblical example and current trends do not match--churches lack consistently in four areas: Aim: They fail to shoot for the new believer's evangelistic influence. Approach: They teach, but do not instill practices. Angle: Non-relational follow-up leads to disconnected disciples. Anticipation: Limited time did not produce lasting impact. Re-visioning, First Steps offers a fourfold course correction. Set your sights on the superior targets--and exciting results await! This guide will prepare you for the biggest assignment ever given: turn simple followers into strategic players.
